Re: anyone decline the PKU?
Why did you choose to decline? If that is not too personal...

Re: anyone decline the PKU?
It is required in our state - any of our little ones will have to have a blood test right away becuase I am an RH - so this test was taken from the same sample - no biggie!

Re: anyone decline the PKU?
It's not how long after birth it's administered, but how long baby has been getting milk - not colostrum - that makes a difference.
Baby should be getting milk (again, not colostrum) for 24+ hours before the test. For formula fed babies, everything is fine to do it 24 hours after the first bottle, kwim? But for breastfed babies, mom's milk wouldn't come in for the first couple days (or possibly even longer), so if the test is done in the first couple days it's actually useless. They do it before baby leave the hospital, though, because then they cover their own arses by having done it, kwim? For us, we have declined it done in the hospital with all the boys (didn't know this info with DD), and instead the nurses give us the test form (with the dots they fill in) and we come in later in the first week. The nurses haven't ever questioned us once we tell them we understand the test, and that baby should be on milk, and that we'll be watching for my milk to come in and will bring baby for the test in the day or 2 following that.

It's required here. My MW will do it while I nurse baby, the suckling and oxytocin can help reduce any pain. I think she will do it the next day.

Re: anyone decline the PKU?
In some States the heel stick tests for over 30 different metabolic and genetic diseases. My newest lo has a metabolic deficiency that my other two don't have.....its not just PKU in most states. I would do it. You or your partner may be carriers and not know it.

Re: anyone decline the PKU?
What makes me nervous is that they keep the samples Indefinitely here in ND. Each state has their own policy as to what is done, when, and how long they keep the samples.
That being said, I am 99% sure we will have it done, I think. DH is strongly opposed to it, so we will see. Read down a bit, it's all there: http://www.councilforresponsiblegene...WNMAKEPP1P.pdf |

Re: anyone decline the PKU?
In AZ they did the test twice. Once right after birth and again 2 weeks later. We did not decline because I thought knowing if there was anything wrong would be better than not knowing.
