Awesome update! And I so agree with the participation awards. Dd plays hockey - they keep score, teams lose, winning teams get trophies. Its motivating. She gets aggravated that other sports don't do the same at her age. I think the competitive piece and winning and losing teaches kids so many life skills that transcends sports.

Many years of competitive gymnastics for me followed by many years of coaching level 4 (I didn't want to coach anything more serious). Like many have said, gyms don't make money off teams. The cost per hour is way less and the coaches are paid way more.
Here, through level 4, you only get participation ribbons. I think it is a USAG rule, but I r been out of the loop for a while. At level 5, the get participation ribbons and placement ribbons. At level 6, just ribbons for placement. Glad she loved it! I spent many hours on the gym and would change it for anything even though it was a huge commitment from my family. |

I'd leave it up to her completely. After doing it for 10 years Im not so sure I will put my own daughter through the same. I very much wanted to do it at the time, I enjoyed moving up levels and going to competition, learning the routines, everything was very fun. I'm competitive nature. But part of it was very ugly, maybe just my gym was bad but it resulted in working us so hard the girls in my class would cry. The day I finally cried was the day I was done. There are often injuries, puberty delayed. It is intense to say the least
If its something she and you are interested in go for it. It can be a big commitment. Just saw the update ![]() Last edited by aemarques; 02-11-2013 at 01:45 PM. |

All I want to add is that my daughter hated team and it turned her off of gymnastics. She ended up quitting :-(

Re: Talk to me about competitive gymnastics -- UPDATE post 19
Just another update.
Abby had a meet last weekend. She did fantastic. She got a 9.5 on bars and a 9.2 on beam. She got mid-8s in floor and vault. Her Championship meet is in a couple of weeks. She absolutely loved doing team and wanrlts to move up to USAG next season. The 4 hours she is at the gym now is not enough for her.

Re: Talk to me about competitive gymnastics --another update
Glad she is loving it! My SIL is a gymnastics coach. Some kids LOVE that enviorment and thrive on friendly competition.
