Teach Your child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons

Anyone used this? Thoughts?

Can it be used as the sole/main method for teaching a kinder how to read, or would I need to suppliment it with other things/methods?

We love it. We tried lots of other things and it was painful. We came to this as a last resort and she is learning so quickly and easily.

Most of the moms in our homeschool group use this and love it. I've posted this before but for me it's just awful. I want reading to be fun and I felt like 100 Easy Lessons was totally overwhelming. I like the cute silly stories with lots of pictures. My son is able to read really long words that he shouldn't know by making inferences based on the pictures. To me 100 Easy Lessons takes all the fun out of reading.

Agreed! It was painful for me to even try to read how to use it. WAY too dry for us. We like the pretty pictures, funny stories, colors, etc. To each their own I say. We are using HOP, ClickN Read and BOB books. The combination has just enough different stuff to keep us interested (we get bored with doing the same thing all the time).

I know a lot of homeschooling moms who love this book. It has great reviews & works for a lot of kids. It didn't work at all for my oldest son (5 1/2). He's very much into reading and the funky letters just made him feel like he wasn't reading a "real" book. He would look at an easy reader and compare it to 100 Easy Lessons and be confused.

I will say that I think this book will be a better fit for my second son who is more "spirited" and totally not interested in anything school related (he's 4 1/2). So I kept the book around b/c I do think it will work better for him than the phonics program that I'm using for my older son. I think it depends on the child and their style/personality. I'd recommend buying it used and that way it's less of a loss if you decide it's not what you're looking for.

I agree w/all these mamas. It just did not work for my oldest son. He was COMPLETELY bored by the 3rd lesson. I switched him to Progressive Phonics. It's a free program on-line. The website is www.progressivephonics.com. You just have to register. We loved it. That being said, I will probably start w/100 easy lessons for DS2 simply because I think the short easy lessons will speak more to his nature.

We tried "Teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons" and it bored us to death. We found it to be overly repetitive . We really enjoyed "The Reading Lessons." it is very similar just not as repetitive.

I tried it and hated it. It was dull and unimpressive. However, I know that many people love it, so who knows. We use, and really like, Sing Spell Read Write (my 4th child is at the beginning right now.)

I bought it on amazon for $10, but haven't gotten a chance to use it yet. I plan on using it mixed with other things to help reading, but dh and I looked through it and in DHs words "this would be better for our 2yo who doesn't know anything, not our 4.5yo." But DS already has a lot of the letter sounds down so maybe that changes it for us.. I still plan on using it as there's a lot more to letter sounds but I do think it could get quite boring and quite frustrating my for DS.

stuck to it as long as we could, but sold it for cheap & have never been happier
