Re: Does this sound like a made up spelling?
I thought right away of a little girl I know named Emilia. If you spell it with an "i" like that it is a traditional spelling. The little girl I know is named after Emilia Wojtyla who was the mother of John Paul II.

Re: Does this sound like a made up spelling?
I voted other because I would pronounce it differently from Amelia.

It is like the boys spelling for Emil, just in a girl form.

Re: Does this sound like a made up spelling?
Nope, not made up
That's how I'd pronounce it, basically a hard "a" sound (like 'a' in ape).Amelia is the longer "ah" sound.

Re: Does this sound like a made up spelling?
Sounds made up to me. I would do the traditional spelling. Granted, I teach in an urban area where most kids have UNEEEK names. My favorite right now is Sir-Izic.

Re: Does this sound like a made up spelling?
I think it could create some confusion spelling-wise. I say if you want people to pronounce it Uh-melia spell it Amelia and if you want Eh-mee-lya, spell it Emilia. . . I think Emmy is the cutest nickname.

I prefer that spelling, actually.
Doesn't sound made up to me.

Re: Does this sound like a made up spelling?
I think some people would first read it as "Emm a lee ah"
But, I do like it better than Amelia...so, i'd choose that spelling over the traditional way.
