Need vehicle advice

We are owners of a 2004 Mercedes wagon. I bought it used last year and paid cash for it. It has had a few issues and my hubby wants to sell it as repair costs are pricey. I am fine with selling it. We hope to get about 10000 out of the sale. I know I want a used van that we can pay cash for. We have some debit that we want to get rid of nothing major except for my student loan.. I was thinking about a 2001 -2003 Honda odyssey with about 125000
-15000 miles on it. These go for about $5500. I was going to use the extra money from the sale of my car and pay off our truck loan. The extra 1500 I was going to use to fix our boat. The other option is to use all the proceeds from the sale of my car and buy a newer (2006-2007) sienna with about 110000 miles. We would still have the truck payment though. We make very good money so the payment doesn't strain us at all. It would just be nice to put the 350 dollars towards my student loan and have that pays off quicker. The additional advantage an older car is that my hubby can do simple things to it like changing the brakes, spark plugs, etc which he can't do with the Mercedes or a new van. Also if anyone drives either vehicle what do you think of it?

I have done quite a bit of research and have learned to be aware of transmission problems in the early 2000 Odyssey models. 2001-2004 seem to be the worst. Even if you come across one that has had the transmission replaced, there can still be problems. It is pretty expensive to fix as well.

Re: Need vehicle advice

Since you're shopping for a van on a budget, I would most definitely consider options other than Siennas and Odysseys. Yes, people rave about them, but because they are so popular, they are also a LOT more expensive than pretty much any other minivan options. 2006 and newer Kia Sedonas have a good reputation for reliability (not older than 2006, though), and even domestic brands (eg Dodge) have improved in reliability immensely in the past 10-15 years.

Can you swing the 06 or newer models. They seat 8 and back Windows roll down, these were requirements for us. We also went with Honda because we have owned them many times and never had issues with falling apart. My dh civic had 220k and runs so smooth and wonderful still. Our old Toyota ran over 300k and sold it still running, was just given a new jobs at that time which is why I didn't keep it

Re: Need vehicle advice

Do you budget more for repairs with the higher mileage vehicles? As a single mom, I don't want to have to deal with a "clunker" that I always have to take to a mechanic but I really want to be out of a car loan.

Thanks for all the advice! Mercedes wagon got traded in this past weekend. We ended up buying a 2005 toyota sienna that seats 8! Almost an even trade. I love my new van!!! Hubby wanted to get a 2010 odyssey but I convinced him that we don't want payments and all the luxuries of that van are wants and not needs and I will be just as happy with the older/less frills sienna.
