16 month old in body cast

My DS will be having surgery on his femur in the next few weeks. We've been told to expect a half body cast for 6 weeks after surgery. It will be a full leg cast on one leg and will come up around his torso. There will be a bend at the hip and one at the knee. He had an arm cast a few months ago, but that was much smaller and relatively easy to care for.

I really don't know what to expect with this. He's very mobile right now (crawling and cruising) and his surgeon said he might figure out how to crawl or scoot with the cast. I have a few sets of Baby legs to cover his cast and free leg. I'm guessing we will need bigger shorts and onesies to go over the cast, but I don't know how much bigger. Will we still be able to use cloth diapers?

We have a variety of wraps and SSC's for baby wearing, but I have no idea what, if anything, will work with the cast.

I've already asked his surgeon about how we will get him into a car seat and she said that the hospital occupational therapists will take care of that before he's discharged, but she didn't give us much info about exactly what to expect. He's still RFing.

I WOH full-time and we have a nanny who DS loves, but she's very young and we've already had a few issues with her not calling me when she should have when my DD1 got injured while I was at work. I really can't afford to take much time off work, but I'm not sure whether I want to leave DS with the nanny while he's in the cast. I'm just really unsure of what his needs will be.

Any advice from someone who has experience with a LO in a body cast is appreciated!

I'm sorry mama. I have no advice, but I couldn't read this and not post. That sounds like a tough go.

I think I would get some sort of swing for the house
Maybe this or a net style one?

Do you have hard Wood or an área that is laminated color? Would he be able to get around on something like this on his tummy using his hands? http://funandfunction.com/round-pull...ard-p-433.html

Otherwise I would stock up on bubbles, playdough, books, maybe tablet apps, super easy puzzles, stickers, finger paints, etc...

Oh no! My dd1 had to have a full leg cast ( not around the hip though) when she was 13 months, crazy kid still walked on it and was basically unaffected somehow. Kids are resilient! Worst part was sleeping, shed forget she had it on and would try to move in her sleep.
I don't remember the car seat situation, I don't believe we FF her for the cast at that point though.

So much will be determined by what position they cast him in. The therapists can help problem solve once he is casted. Kids are resilient. Once the meds wear off and the pain settles, he'll figure out how to get around. Diapers will depend on the contours of the cast. You might have to get a little creative. As for the nanny, can you spend a day with her before you go back to work to make sure she's comfortable with his care? I hope everything goes smoothly!

Re: 16 month old in body cast

My only interaction with a kiddo that had a full body cast was a bit older. I believe he was 2-3 years old. He was able to pull himself around and played just like always with his toys. He was just kinda laid on his side. He had the same type cast your describing for your son. I would imagine he will figure it all out. Good luck!

Re: 16 month old in body cast

Years ago I cared for a child in a spica cast. The parents used disposables and just sort of stuffed them in the opening like a maxi pad. The cast went all around the hips. Maybe if only one side is casted you will be able to close a diaper around him but if you need to stuff a diaper up into the cast you might want to consider aios for the waterproof layer. You may need to remove the closure on the side you stuff in the cast.
Though in all honesty, disposables just might be easier to keep the cast clean if baby will be cared for by someone else during the day.
Sorry that you and baby have to go through this. I hope that the surgery is successful and I wish him a speedy recovery.
