Ours was a planned homebirth, but dh ripped the mattress protector putting it on, then I knocked over the bowl holding the placenta so there was blood ask over the mattress and I dripped a good amount on the carpet going to the bathroom. Peroxide took it all out. Including the normal sheets, clothes etc that ran through the wash. Peroxide the heck out of everything. My other two hbs were no mess at all

I didn't actually give birth at home, but my water broke while I was in bed. I had a placental abruption and when it broke the mattress was covered in blood. We just trashed the mattress since it was older. I'm not sure who cleaned the blood trail through the house that I left while trying to get to my parents house next door for help. The house was clean when I got home from the hospital so I never worried about it.

The shower curtain and old blanket idea sounds good. I might do that just in case since I have an hour drive to the hospital this time.

Re: Those who gave birth in a car or accidentallu at home....

I planned an unassisted homebirth but gave birth at a friends house instead of at my house. Didn't have any of my supplies with me. It really wasn't messy..... I climbed into her tub and had a water birth, lol.

I have 2 friends who gave birth in the car. Looking at their cars now you would never know. No stains or anything.

All 3 of my boys were born at home. Flannel-backed table cloths on the floor and lots of old towels kept everything clean

Unassisted HB here. Our MW didn't make it in time but we had all the supplies with us. We had a chucks pad on the bed. I think the only thing we threw away were my socks . Everything else went in the washer.

Re: Those who gave birth in a car or accidentallu at home....

I had an unplanned home birth assisted by two paramedics. According to husband and paramedics, it looked like a crime scene in the bathroom. I don't remember much. When we got home from the hospital, the police officers had kindly cleaned up the majority of the floors, walls, cabinets, etc. They threw all the bloody pillows, blankets, and towels in the bathtub. They were kind enough to leave a hazard materials bag in which everything got thrown away in. It was not worth attempting to clean. When the paramedics arrived, they asked if I wanted to be moved. I cannot image the mess had we moved to the bedroom or had I delivered in the car. Yuck.
