Suggestions for 2nd grade curriculum???

I'm new to homeschooling and am a bit overwhelmed by all the choices! Does anyone have suggestions for 2nd grade material? My son is in and out of the hospital a lot, so we need something that is easy to transition back and forth. Also, bc of my responsibilities with him + 2 other kiddos I'm not sure about my ability to put together my own lesson plans for each day--I think I'll need something that is mostly outlined for us already. Thanks for any help!!!

Did you want secular or Christian curriculum?

I'm not necessarily looking for a Christian one--whichever is the best overall, realizing I can always weave faith lessons into a secular one if it seems to be a better fit for his needs/learning style.

If I had to choose a boxed curriculum, it would be either Sonlight or Memoria Press.

What learning style? That makes a big difference. For instance, the Sonlight that pp mentioned is a great curriculum, but if you need something hands-on, you'll have to do quite a bit of tweaking to it. I know because I loved the idea of it and tried it one year and it was terrible with my hands-on learner.

I will recommend Christian Light Education if he doesn't mind writing and doing workbooks. It is very easy to teach as the teacher's manual explains everything to you and gives you ideas of what to say. It also gives you the workbook pages with answers. The workbooks are easy to travel with. My boys can work in their books independently for the most part once I've explained the lesson.

They do have a lesson plan in the teacher's manual and the price is affordable. You don't have to buy everything at once. Just buy what you need as you go and it allows you to test it out without losing too much.

He's definitely hands-on and visual. Side-effects from chemo mean we'll probably need to break down lessons into shorter sections and do some variety each day to hold his attention.

I am using My Fathers World Adventures for my second grader this year. It is very easy to miss a day and make it up later in the week.

Re: Suggestions for 2nd grade curriculum???

here are some of my faves...they are easy to transport, the lessons aren't long, and you can pick up easily where you left off.

Reading/Phonics---Rod & Staff, inexpensive and Christian based
Math--Mammoth Math, she sends you an email link and you print off the material
History--Story of the World, you can get audio CDs so you can transport it anywhere

for science I would just read books at the library about things that interested him and do random experiments as you can

Handwriting...we just write Bible verses

Re: Suggestions for 2nd grade curriculum???

For science, I would recommend Apologia. You can break the lessons down however you need to, the notebook is fun, and the experiments usethings around the house or at least easy to get and inexpensive.

We love Math-U-See. It does have a dvd, though you can teach it with just the teacher's manual. I have heard some moms say they do that. My kids enjoy the dvd, though.

For reading/phonics we use Rod and Staff. It is workbook, but short and to the point.

We don't do formal history at that age. We read a lot of historic fiction or listen to audiobooks.
