CPST said No Tether with RF Marathon

I just had a carseat check last week because I didn't feel our RFing Britax Marathon was in tight enough. We have a 2012 Honda Odyssey. The seat was installed using LATCH second row on the drivers side. I had the tether going down and clipped to the bars in the floor (where you install the actual seat of the car) using that extra strap, since the bar is too thick for the clip. Not ideal, but it was the best I could find.

When I brought it for them to check, she said the seat was in pretty tight. But she said for a RFing Britax, they do NOT recommend the tether, unless you can do one of the two scenarios shown in the manual. And it needed to be exactly as shown. She said, like an infant seat, it needed to have a little bounce/give if on a crash.

So the seat is in really tight with no tether. She used a pool noodle to get the angle right. I trust that she knows what she's talking about. I'm just surprised about no tether.

What did you do with your RFing Marathon? Tether or no tether?

I used a tether and did the same as you.

Re: CPST said No Tether with RF Marathon

I tether mine, but with the RF tether going toward the front of the car. I can't quite tell if yours was toward the front of the car or not. I would probably be a bit concerned if it is going back sort of under the vehicle seat that the marathon is installed on.

Assuming that this is for the newly-1 year old, you probably don't *need* a pool noodle. The angle is allowed to be anywhere between 30* and 45* (measured down from vertical), and an older child is often more comfortable with the seat being more upright. (However the seat does have to be in the farthest reclined position on the base.)

As much as I know you are allowed to use a tether when rearfacing a Britax carseat.

Interesting! The rf tether feature is why we bought our marathons!

Was it tethered to the driver's seat track, or the seat it was installed on?

Re: CPST said No Tether with RF Marathon

I have never tethered my RF Britax seats, partially because I could not find a location to do so well/easily in previous vehicles.

I now have the same model Odyssey and would like to tether our RF seat. There was a car-seat.org blog review of the latest Odyssey van in which she demonstrated only 1-2 acceptable locations for the tether; neither was beneath the 2nd row seat. The reviewer found the inside base of the passenger seat to be an acceptable spot for RF passenger/center seats. For center/driver side seats she found the bars where the front row center console attaches, but this would require removing the console.

I tried today to get the d-ring strap around the passenger seat leg (she said it takes every last centimeter of the strap in her video), but I still couldn't get it to loop all the way around in the limited time I had.

You could also call Honda for an acceptable location.

It wasn't the seat it was installed on, but the bar on the floor of the car that the seat itself latches onto. Does that make sense? I uses the d-ring around that bar. So it was kind of straight down, but slightly off to the middle of the car.
