Saxon math or Singapore math for 1st grade

I used Saxon math 3 for 3rd grade year for my son, and for 4th grade, I decided go with Singapore math for grade 4. I haven't used it, but I have the books and love them very much. I love the mental math approach and cute look of the book for fun.

Now I'm trying to decide which math curriculum to buy for my daughter. I want to purchase grade 1 math for her.
I was going to go with Saxon, since I liked Saxon 3, but now that I see Singapore math, I like it too.

I know there are some people who use Saxon for grade 1 - 3, then switch to something else after that. What is your reason for not using that curriculum to begin with instead of starting with Saxon?

Re: Saxon math or Singapore math for 1st grade

Not sure how much help I'm going to be for you but why not maybe do both. I am doing CLE Math for first grade but I am going to add Singapore Standards as a supplement. I love CLE and know it's a good math program but it's more geared toward repetition and memorization with some mental math. Singapore is more of a mastery mental math approach. I feel that by combining the 2 programs my kids will get the best of both. Singapore for the mental approach and the practice and repetition of CLE to make it stick.

I've been doing lots of researching on this and it appears that in Singapore they also supplement with other texts and workbooks to enhance their program.

We use Singapore for grade 1 math. I feel like it provides a solid foundation in typical math algorithms AND in mentally breaking apart numbers, etc.

Thanks! I'd love to do both, the only reason I wouldn't do both is the cost. I think they are both great curriculum. I might get more idea about what I want to do once I start using Singapore Math 4 for my son. They all seem like great program and I want to use them all...! lol

Re: Saxon math or Singapore math for 1st grade

I am using Singapore 1A for my son right now. It is a very thorough curriculum. Our reviewer was impressed with what he is learning. I really like the approach of doing concrete manipulative instruction first, followed by colorful pictures in the textbook to further the instruction and finally going to the workbook to practice the new skill.
