Tax write offs?

Our accountant is working on our taxes right now and we owe. He is asking us for any write offs that we haven't already given him. Can you think of anything that we might have missed? Dh is basically self-employed he does side work in construction. we have our mortgage stuff, some mileage, charitable donations, materials and expenses, but I'm hoping there are some things we are missing that could help lower our tax bill. Thanks!!!

I think we got those covered. I honestly don't think he's missed anything but a girl can hope and pray. We really don't have the money to be paying out right now. Here I was hoping we might gets a small refund and we could pay off our truck early.

Re: Tax write offs?

some states allow SALES TAX deduction (deduct sales tax on ALL purchases made), some states allow vehicle registration fees to be written off etc...

if he is self-employed and works from home (even a portion of the time) you can write off utilities, home security costs, maintenance costs, phone bills, and even a portion of your mortgage. For example, my husband works from home and his office is about 400 sq feet out of our 2500 sq ft home. We can write off almost a sixth of all monthly bills (cable TV, phones, A/C, heat, water, mortgage, ADT, HOA fees, gas for car to get to airport etc) and it really adds up!

another cool tip is that you can write off your tax preparation fees from last year. If you paid $250 to have your taxes done last year by a CPA, you can deduct those this year! I recommend doing turbotax.com yourself and just seeing what you come up with. We used to pay an accountant to do it, but last year I did it on turbotax for $30 and we got back more than $3k than we were expecting with the CPA doing it! Will never go back again!

Hope this helps!

Re: Tax write offs?

Thanks for all the ideas. He doesn't do anything at home except for a tiny bit of billing from his laptop on the couch. Not enough to claim anything here.
My uncle is our accountant and he doesn't charge us to do our taxes (huge blessing).

Sales taxes, home improvement/energy efficiency credits, vehicle licensing. Most everything we had has been mentioned.
