PSA: secret shopper scam

This may be limited to Canada, but this type of scam could operate anywhere. Today I recieved a very official looking letter accepting me as a mystery shopper. it describes two jobs to do and has a form to fill out on the back for me to fill out. With it was a check. And this is where my alarm bells started going off. The check was for $3890.00.

The first task it asks of you is to buy items totaling at least $100, that the check is to cover, as well as payment for your time. the second task is to send most of the rest check to two seperate people in the US, supposedly to test for fraud.

My guess is that this is a variation of the craigslist scam. The check is bad, but by the time you find that out you've sent money away. I've already contacted the RCMP.

I don't understand the part where it tells you to mail to two separate people the rest of the check to test for fraud???

I don't have it in front of me, but it was the excuse for the wire transfers (i think I didn't make that clear, the rest of the money was supposed to be transferred via western union) being so large. apparently there were suspected shenannigans with wire transfers of over 1k.

A local article about the scam. I found this when I was looking into it. The company on this woman's letter is different, but from what I can see the letter is pretty well identical otherwise.
