Lightbulb Sewing Demonstration speech ieas

I have to make something as a demonstration for speech class. I figured a circle skirt would be easiest, but they aren't coming out right. Does anyone else have some ideas of what I can do? It's for college level students, I don't think any of them sew, so it needs to be really basic. A few have dog or rabbit, pets etc, quite a few are majoring in medical assistant careers, physical thearpy etc. I spent so much time on the skirt my brain is dead.

What about a small zippered pouch like is in your avi?

That's a good idea, but I am worried that they may have a hard time understanding sewing zippers.

How about a Velcro pouch instead of a zipper? Easier for sure.

I always see aprons and pillows in beginner books. Maybe an envelope pillow which has no closures. A lot of people seem to get started sewing by making curtains, maybe you could do that? I think figuring out yardage requirements and fabric widths is a tough part of learning to sew, so you could incorporate that info, too.

Re: Sewing Demonstration speech ieas

have them make one of those drawstring backpack things it helps them learn:

-how to sew a straight line
-how to make a casing (and topstitching)
-how to create a drawstring
-how to sew corners
-how to make something they are willing to actually use
-learning to backstitch every time

bonus part of the lesson: letting them decorate the bag however they want using paint, stencils, iron ons etc...now that I think about it maybe make it a 2 part learning lesson and teach them how to make their own block stencil to create their own print and then create the drawstring backpack from that

its simple enough for a beginner but its complex enough for them to learn different sewing concepts while keeping them interested because its something they can use.

and if all else fails choose a simple grocery tote

Re: Sewing Demonstration speech ieas

This is for a speech class, as in public speaking? So you are supposed to be giving a speech as part of the demo for your grade, right?

What about a pair of fleece pants? I did a pair for my baby the other day, took a half hour from start to finish. It's easy to do, allows for you do to lots of talking while doing things like folding over hems and pinning, the sewing is super easy.
