Stuttering?

My 5 year old DS has always paused a lot when he speaks, usually when he's really excited or splitting his attention (like looking at one thing and talking about another). He. Just. Sort. Of... Talks like... This. Sometimes. He is advanced academically, and his mind is always running a millions miles an hour. When I remind him to slow down and look at me, it gets much, much better.

Lately though, he's been stuttering. Not a ton, but enough that its got me wondering. For example he was just saying, "I think the c c c coin face guy doesn't doesn't know what it is." He doesn't do it all the time, but I haven't exactly figured out when its worse, or there's a common factor. It does get better when I ask him to slow down and look at me, but he will still stutter a bit.

Is it odd that he didn't develop a stutter until now? He's only recently started doing it (in the last month probably). Should we seek some sort of evaluation now? Or wait? He's not in school and I have no idea where to start the process of having this evaluated if need be.

It can be common. Most SLPs recommend it continue for more than 6 months before treatment. It could just be stress related. But seeking out an eval certainly won't hurt.
