ADHD diagnosis

Our 6yr old was just diagnosed with ADHD. We have had behavioural concerns since he was 2yrs. He has issues with inattention, impulsiveness and emotional up/downs at school and at home. So we filled out a big questionnaire and had his teacher fill one out as well and apparently that's all his dr needs to diagnose? He brought up meds immediately and told us to go home and talk/think about it. DH is very pro med in general so wants to sign right up, I have reservations. I'm not necessarily opposed but I can't decide if it's really the right choice for us. Has anyone had any success going the diet or naturopath route? Are things like Feingold worth the money?

We eliminated red dye 40 before trying meds. It helped but we still had to go the med route. That may help some.

Re: ADHD diagnosis

I took my dd to a psychologist who did tests to confirm the doctor's diagnosis. There is a checklist of symptoms on the DSM-IV and to be diagnosed you need to meet a certain number of symptoms. I personally don't feel comfortable with a regular pediatrition or family physician diagnosing but that is just me. It can't hurt to modify diet. Try to eat more naturally, less dyes and preservatives, etc. Less refined sugars. We chose the medication route as dd's is quite severe.

Re: ADHD diagnosis

Thats similar for my DS, we had been seeing a developmental pediatrician for 2 years before trying for the DX so he was very familiar with DS. But really it was just similar to a standardized test that his teacher and I filled out.

Re: ADHD diagnosis

Who did the diagnosis? The questionnaires are pretty common in the diagnosis process, the developmental specialist my boys see uses them too (which is difficult since my children are homeschooled so no "teacher", we use our TKD co-instructor). My youngest saw our pedi for behavioral therapy for the better part of a year before being referred on for a diagnosis. While I would trust my pedi to diagnose he doesn't feel comfortable with it. My pedi does specialize in childhood development (which is why he does behavioral therapy) he doesn't like to do diagnosing.

Sorry that was long and didn't really deal with your question. Over the years I have tried almost every alternative treatment for my two special needs kiddos. They have a host of diagnoses including ADHD. Some things worked, others did not but I am willing to try almost anything I don't think is dangerous. While diet change is not dangerous (as long as it isn't extreme, don't feed your child only cabbage or anything) in my experience aside from alleviating allergies it has done nothing to treat true medical conditions. I know that it is popular on this site but to be honest ADHD, bipolar, autism, OCD, are medical conditions and the children and adults with these diagnoses fair much better with proper treatment (medical and therapeutic). That is not to say that a healthy diet, discipline plan, sleep regimen and physical activity schedule cannot play a big roll in treatment, but in my opinion as the parent of two SN kids (and a person who was diagnosed bipolar who did not receive proper treatment until I was an adult) it is only a small piece of the puzzle.

Re: ADHD diagnosis

Was it a pediatrician that diagnosed him or a specialist? A form is an important part but I would want a full evaluation done by a neuropsych or other specialist. It doesn't hurt to try diet changes first. I will be eliminating food dyes, preservatives, artificial flavorings, artificial vanilla and sugars with dd and ds this summer to see if there is improvement. If it didn't work I would be open to try meds if it came to that road. It is better it gets treated properly then they try to treat it with drugs or alcohol down the road. Kids with ADHD are highly at risk for alcohol problems and kids that are not on meds are actually more likely to self medicate with alcohol.

Re: ADHD diagnosis

I keep flip flopping so much with this. DH thinks it ridiculous to even consider an alternative to medication. At the same time I know that this is a medical condition and maybe meds could be great. Everyone keeps making it seem like medicating him is the worst possible thing I could do. I can't seem to find an unbiased opinion anywhere which is why I posted. Thank you all for your opinions!

Re: ADHD diagnosis

Hugs, mama...we are new to this too. I completely understand all your feelings. We are doing a trial of meds right now. I can't say I'm thrilled with the idea of putting my child on meds. The deciding factor for me was my sister...the crunchiest, most natural, holistic, organic person I know! She is an administrator in a small, private school and encouraged me to go the med route. She claims she has seen so many children whose parents are reluctant to test and try meds. She sees these children struggling daily and knows many that have gone on to self-medicate in very unhealthy ways when they are older. I guess I trust her experience and backround. This, along with her stong beliefs in all things "natural", tipped the scale for me. I don't know it that helps or not! I'm certainly not trying to push my you one way or the other, just wanted to share and let you know you're not alone! : )
