Re: Emergency Birth Kit

A friend of mine had an unintentional homebirth a little while ago, and they were unprepared...she got her DH to slide a baby tub under her as she started to push (to catch the "drippings!", and they tied the cord with some dental floss after it stopped pulsating. All was good, so they didn't transfer.

You could always get a copy of the handout "what to do if baby arrives before midwife" so your DH isn't completely on his own

Re: Emergency Birth Kit

Never had a homebirth, so just imagining:

Maybe a snotfrida or something handy to clear out the baby's nose if needed.
I've heard of people making the bed in layers: shower curtain (or waterproof bed protector), sheets, bed protector, sheets, so that if your water breaks, or you give birth in the bed, you can just rip off the top two layers to expose a clean bed.

Re: Emergency Birth Kit

I had an unassisted childbirth recently and I bought a birth kit and used very little of it.

I used the cord clamp (could have just used the dental floss I was planning before buying the kit) and the depends and very few of the chux. Really, depends for the after bleeding, was the most useful thing in there.

Household stuff: a bowl, towels, scissors and alcohol.
