Why scare the children?

I took my kids to a yard sale, there was a guy there with missing fingers. As we were leaving he stuck his hand right up in the kids face wiggled his finger stubs and told the kids "be careful! There's a bear in the woods right over there that will eat off your fingers!" The yard sale was in the woods. We live in the woods. Thanks for the nightmares, buddy.

Why do people seem to get joy out of terrifying kids?

Ugh, I don't know but I hate it. Power trip, I think.

Sometimes they think they're being funny and don't actually expect the kid to believe them.

Re: Why scare the children?

I do think some people do it to be funny, not thinking it to be scary. We had a family member who had lost his leg and had a prostetic on there. My oldest was about 22 months and was toddling around and just kind of eyeing it up and down. He saw her looking at it and in good spirit wanted to show her it was ok. When he popped it off my daughter flipped the freak out. She screamed for a good 45 minutes. This was someone she had known since birth, and been around, but never seen him in shorts.

Re: Why scare the children?

What the heck? I grew up in the woods as in no street lights dirt road and all and I am still scared of the dark. As a kid I wouldn't need anyone adding to my imagination. But do agree older ppl who don't have little ones may not realize they are being scary instead of funny especially if they are a bit off?

I slightly giggled as it's such an old man thing to do. I've seen/heard several things before. Not great for your kids though.

If it makes you feel better my FIL often drops certain inappropriate words during a football game we all cringe with lots of young kids around. They haven't picked up anything yet though and he is quickly shushed.
