It is foam (possibly designed for seat cushions?) that was purchased at Hancock Fabrics, although I'm sure any fabric store would have something similar. Then cut to size. There was only a 2" gap, and the foam is 4" thick, so it is compressed. You can see it is bulging out of the crib slats. Actually, I couldn't even get it in myself, I had to have DH do it. I like that, because I know there wont be any gaps. It was pricey though. For enough to fill the gap in the crib and also a gap with the race car bed and its mattress, they were asking $57. We had a 40% off coupon though, and my MIL paid for it. Still, I like the exact fit enough that it was worth it.

Looks great!!! I used my pillows and blankets when my baby was born. I just made sure baby was not in them or near my pillows. My arm was awlways under him, still is 13 months later...LOL!
