Realistically stripping is only for diapers with buildup. With buildup you would likely have repelling. With barnyard stink it sounds like they are just not clean. Either up the detergent or add a disinfectant. Consider that for an older baby your homemade may no longer be working.

But its his diapers from younger days that are stinky.

I think I'll try a long soak in oxygen bleach.

Where do you get washing soda? Can I find that at Walmart? I live in a small town and Walmart is all we have

Yep! Walmart in the laundry aisle. All that stuff should right by each other: the washing soda, borax, and zote or fels naphtha.
