First solids, how much?

Hi all! I just started introducing my DD to solids, she is almost 5 months. Per my doctor's recommendation I started with rice cereal. The label says to start with one tablespoon of cereal to five tablespoons of milk. I've done this for the past couple of days. When can I start increasing the amount of rice cereal I feed her? How much should I increase it by? Also what about the ratio of milk to cereal, what should that be at? Thanks for your help ladies!

I just used to pour some in a bowl and add enough breast milk or formula to it to make it as thick/thin as I wanted.

Re: First solids, how much?

There aren't any real "rules". After the first 1-2 days, I just eyeballed it. Pour some cereal in a cup/bowl, add enough milk to get a consistency that seems good, feed it to baby. You can make it as thick or thin as your baby likes. As for quantity, I would make what I thought dd would eat, and then feed her until she stopped wanting more. The amount she would actually eat varied quite a bit from day to day. The only thing that would overrule baby's appetite is that I would have cut back on the cereal if she had gotten constipated (but that didn't happen).

I also never measured the amount of cereal to milk, I just made it a thick/thin as seemed good. For me, that's not so thing that I can't get it on the spoon, but not so thick I have to dig it out of the bowl... Neither of my kids really ate cereal (any of them, rice, wheat, barley, whatever else they sell...) very well. So mostly we just did fruits and vegetables.

this. start out like soup then increase to oatmeal consistency. You increase after you know that they can or will take it.Usually as the months go by you can make it thicker...
