Circumcision Question

Hello! I wasn't sure where to post this question but I am hoping one of you mamas can help me out.

I know that circumcision is not a popular choice anymore but we are still planning to have our second son circumcised after he's born in September (for numerous reasons).

I am not trying to start a debate but just wondering if anyone has some advice on where to get it done.

When our first was born we waited 8 days (religious reasons) and took him back to my OB who delivered him and she did it for us (all went very smoothly, no problems).

This time around we are using a birthing center and they are pretty against circumcision and have no recommendations.

I guess we could schedule again with my old OB...it just seems odd since we are not using her for the birth... idk

Added to this problem, we also have changed insurance and are a little worried about the cost this could incur. We have heard horror stories of friends and family who have done this same thing and ended up costing them up to $4000! Crazy. We will definitely be contacting our insurance provider for more info about cost soon. But, just wondering if anyone has been in the same predicament...

TIA for any advice/input.

We had ours at hospital. I did it for few reasons. Some say rabai (spellin off probably) as less pain from dr. 90210 & linda lee did it in alater episode.

Other than that idk for you. We have high deductible so we hit that & a good chunk then was fine for us.

Re: Circumcision Question

Not sure, as everyone I know has delivered in a hospital and had it done there before the baby comes home. Maybe a pediatric urologist's office if there is one around you?

And I'm not sure about insurance paying it, since some insurances consider it a "cosmetic" procedure. Definitely check on that.

Re: Circumcision Question

My son's pediatrician did his in the hospital. But I know that with some peds you can schedule to do it either in their office a few days after birth.

When I went to my sons 2 weeks appt at the pediatricians office they offered to do it there and I overheard them talking about a baby boy that was there and getting circumcised. So I bet your ped would do it at an appointment.

Re: Circumcision Question

The pediatric urologist at a hospital is the one who corrects problems and advises obs and pedis on how to do it, so I'd call him/her and ask if they take your insurance. I would think in most cases, the urologist would be the most skilled/have the most practice.

Re: Circumcision Question

I'd recommend trying to find a urologist, especially a pediatric one, to do the procedure. I work in a fairly rural small hospital (we have about 400 births per year), and either the Family Medicine or Pediatrics doctors do the circumcisions. The OB doesn't do any baby care after birth, and I'd be cautious about having any ob/gyn doing a circumcision since they usually aren't very experienced doing them because their main training is in female reproductive health.

Someone already mentioned it, but you should probably check with your insurance whether they will cover the procedure, especially if you are planning on waiting 8 days after birth. Some will cover circumcision done during a hospital admission for the first few days of a newborn's life, but after that some will consider it an elective cosmetic procedure and will not cover it or will only cover a small portion of the cost.

Oh, and also when you are calling the doctor for an appointment, you should ask what they use for pain relief in the newborn. Some don't give any anesthesia, but it's more and more common to at least use a topical anesthetic (a cream they leave on for at least 10-15 minutes to numb the skin) or a penile ring block (inject a local anesthetic like Lidocaine in several places around the penis to numb the nerves). Often they will also give a pacifier with a sugar solution to suck on to help with pain. It seems to help soothe the baby, but they are not 100% sure why it works.

Thank you all for your advice (and for you being kind about this heated subject, I know we all have differences of opinion on things like this).

Re: Circumcision Question

The pediatricians do it where I live. I haven't heard of any OBs doing it here. We had our son at the birthing center and had him circumcised at 3 weeks...we were still debating so it took a little longer lol. I dont know of anyone here who still does it at the hospital either. A lot of peds will do it at the 2 week appt or so. Also, I've only ever heard that it costs in the $300 range for the procedure (from a few friends in different states and it was true for us too).

Re: Circumcision Question

I don't circ, but I know the hospital does it before mom is discharged.
One of my friends didn't want to do it that early, so the pedi sent her to a specialist and he did it.
Her insurance did NOT cover it since it was changed to cosmetic surgery, and not routine procedure. I'm not sure how much she paid. My hospital charges $600.
