Help! 9 year old not sleeping

I'm looking for suggestions to help my 9 year old daughter fall asleep faster. For the last two weeks or so she has been awake until at least 10, much later on some nights. Lights out is 8:30. She's up by 7 for school--Wednesday was first day--and oh so very cranky in the afternoons.

We have tried--without success--cutting sweets, adding exercise, letting her read in bed, more cuddles, music, guided meditation, more light in room, less light.

I'm at the end of my patience with cranky and tired dd.

Tara, happily at home with dd Rowan(4/04)

I would try Melatonin. Worked great for my boys to help them fall asleep.

Re: Help! 9 year old not sleeping

Was she sleeping in late before school started? That could be an issue. My boys went from later bedtimes and sleeping in the next day till 9-10am to waking at 6:30am for school the last few day, so I hear ya! We had a very grumpy morning today! It will take some time to adjust but eventually they will start going to sleep earlier. I am hoping to use their tiredness to ease their bedtimes back over the next week but they both know that they can ask for melatonin anytime they just can't get to sleep. Melatonin can be a great help in resetting wonky sleep schedules.
