Need a tech to help me! I think I have been doing it wrong!

I have a Ford Freestar van, two FF Britax Frontiers in the outboard positions of the 3rd row. The third row only has one LATCH position, which is center, so the seats have been installed with the seatbelts (kids are beyond the recommended 40 pound LATCH limit anyway). BUT, because there is only one top tether point, also in the center of the 3rd row, I have had both seat TT to that same one anchor point. Is this wrong?

DH's Dodge pickup (full cab) has a convoluted top tether system, where the owner's manual says to route the TT straps through loops located behind the headrests and connect them to the single, center top tether anchor in the middle of the 3rd row. So, I know the truck allows for sharing, but I don't know if the van does...

Most of the time, that is not allowed. I'll let someone with a LATCH manual confirm.

You can't share tether anchors, and you can't have them angled too much (there is a specific degree that's allowed). The only position in the 3rd row able to use the tether is the center. Sorry

Crashing your thread op, but why isn't is okay? Is it really more 'un-safe' to share a top tether than to not use one?? I don't have this problem, although I may in the future, but don't understand how sharing one could be worse than not using one at all.

Because it's not allowed by the manufacturer (of the seat or the vehicle). It could be that it wasn't tested, it could be that it tested and failed. Either way, doubling up on a top tether anchor is never allowed, and as far as the angle, I'm not sure why it's not allowed other than it's not.

Good to know! So in op's case, it really is safer to not have them top tethered?

Depending on the child's weight not having it tethered is not an option. So in that case you'd need to use a different spot to install that seat.

That's not true in the US. There are a couple seats that require tethering, but for most, it's optional (although very strongly recommended).

In Canada, it's required to top tether all FF seats. So, if the OP were in Canada, she would have to use a different seating location for a FF seat.

I was thinking of the Frontier specifically, it seems like they require it based on weight?

Don't ask me why I thought the OP was in the US, can I blame pregnancy brain?

IIRC the Frontier requires tethering to 50lbs.
