We use kefir, spinach, fruit and orange juice.

Banana blueberry
Banana mango
Banana peach

I like banana in smoothies

But we add tons of stuff. Watermelon gives great nutrients.

I found soaking the chia was better for my tastes. I usually avoid protein powder. We have a Hamilton beach smoothie maker our teen uses for breakfast. She does milk yogurt and some frozen raspberries & blueberries usually. Mango occasionally but it's harder to blend. When I would make them for her I always threw spinach in there as well.

I'm sure the thing will burn out but it was pretty cheap on Amazon. I sold things on eBay until I had enough for a refurbished vitamix. One of the best things I ever bought.

Re: Must haves for smoothies

For me must haves are:

Honey for sweetening
Soy milk (this is my favorite by far in smoothies- i like the light vanilla)
Spinach (you can sneak it into just about anything for extra nutrition)
And an odd choice... avocado!

My favorite smoothie- only if you LOVE avocado:

-half an avocado
-one banana
-handful of spinach
-soy milk
-squeeze of honey

My smoothie is pretty simple. Water,2 cups of kale or spinach and 1-2 cups of whatever fruit I have. I also have a cheap blender so we blend water and greens first then throw in the frozen fruit.
