Re: Group Strep B worry.

Had the GBS culture yesterday at 4pm. (i'm 37 weeks). And it came back POSITIVE in Less than 24hours. My OB got a call from the lab this morning at 10! Well i call that a big fail. So i am obviously a "heavy carrier". I did probiotics, ate Tons of natural yogurt, did yogurt tampons, vinegar baths. All were obviously not effective for my body.

I had planned on laboring at home and making it to the hospital for a dose of antibiotics before birth. Today the Doctor said, Please come in early so we can get two doses of antibiotics before birth. I am 80% thinned out so he feels that labor will go fast when it starts. So the new plan is natural birth in the hospital. I hope it happens. It's not worth the risk if i'm a "heavy carrier". Ugggggggg feeling a little mad at my body.

I know you will do great! If I could make it down there in enough time I would call in all my staff so I could be with you. I think the key to a positive birth experience for you with GBS will be to reduce monitoring to the absolute necessity so that you can move and labor in the most comfortable positions.

I know you would! I think i can handle the hospital. I can always refuse things i don't want. I would rather be at home during most labor, but not worth the risk of a bad infection to baby. Now if he would just hurry up and get here!!

There is a rapid test for GBS, it takes an hour to get the results.

Yes, a rapid test does exist. However, not all hospitals or birthing centers offer the test. It seems stupid to test so far in advance when the GBS usually only lasts for up to a week at a time, and comes and goes.

I asked about the rapid test at my last appointment and the midwife said only one hospital in our area offers it (and not the one I'm going to), but she's not sure why. She guessed that maybe the equipment was too expensive or something.

Anyway, I'm excited for the day when you get tested right when you get to the hospital. It would save a lot of babies' lives and it would save moms who are actually negative at the time a lot of worry and pain.
