twin with smaller sac

So I am trying not to freak out.

Yesterday we went in for a 2nd ultrasound of the twins. I am 11w2d.
We discovered they are mono-di, so two sacs but one placenta.
The worrisome part is that Twin 2 is measuring a week smaller than Twin 1. Also his/her sac is significantly smaller.
Both heartbeats were strong, and both babies were moving a lot, which I take as a good sign.

The MFM said that there is nothing we can do at this point but wait and see.

Has anyone had any experience with this? I know it is super early....

It's going to be hard to wait 2 more weeks to see if everything is still OK.

Re: twin with smaller sac

We were told one twin is smaller than the other at our last MFM visit at 15.4 weeks. His fluid level was also a bit lower than the bigger baby. We were also told that our smaller baby has a marginal/valementous cord.
We were told just to wait and see. It could even out or it could be the beginnings of TTTS.
I go to my regular ob on Monday and am praying that everything has evened out.

Re: twin with smaller sac

It IS so hard! Sadly, this is our last pregnancy and I have not enjoyed much of it at all.
It also doesn't help that our MFM is completely gloom and doom all the time. About everything.
We've just given it over to God and are doing our best to relax.

The waiting was the worst. Try and eat and drink plenty. Rest and don't over tax yourself. Laying on your left side gives maximum blood flow from your body to the babies.

At one point my smaller baby was basically shrink wrapped in her sac. They admitted and used a needle and syringe to drain over a liter of fluid from my bigger babies sac to make space for smaller baby. It was scary, after that smaller baby started doing much better.

So, it's not uncommon for the twins to measure a week apart, that is the way that they form, normally they seperate a week from the original conception. 2nd. My twins were the same, one placenta, and though 2 sacks, 1 very thin membrane. Relax, educate and if inclined, pray. Email me if you would like, mine are almost 14 now.....many tense days. They actually were identified as having Twin to Twin Tranfusion very late ondago_23225@yahoo.com

Thank you, twinyy! Trying hard to relax and let things take their course. I'm anxious to hear their heartbeats again in a few days.

I to am waiting. Found out yesterday that baby 3 is actually babies 3 and 4. Both measure about the same. Baby A is 8w,1d and Baby B is 8w. But Baby has a smaller gestational sac. I am not sure how much smaller and the ultra sound tech wouldn't or couldn't tell me much. Both had good heart beats though. Another sonogram a week from today. Still waiting for the doctor to call. Its driving me crazy. I just want to know what is going to happen!

Re: twin with smaller sac

They can measure a lot differently during the process. My son at the end was only 3 pounds and my other son was 5 pounds 8 ounces. I went to the specialist through out and he said as long as they both grow and heartbeats are good it was okay. He of course did all kinds of sonograms and tests. He watched all of their organs develop and gave me a shot for lung development in my last trimester. I would not worry if they are both growing and heartbeats are good. I would also consider going to a specialist. They seem a lot better with multiple pregnancies but most of them don't deliver the baby. They just monitor it and fix things that are wrong in utero if necessary.
