Raynaud's - ever have it? Know about it?

I am havving some pain and my doula conferenced with a LC and theyt hink it is this. I am going to call a LC at OU to make an appointment Monday, but was wondering if anyone had any experience with it. Just for background my baby does have a poor latch, but we got it good enought o avoid sore nipples and blisters. She does smack a lot while nursing and always burps alot after.

Yes, we struggled w/Raynauds/possibly thrush for 2mos. What finally helped me was a supplement of vitamins....Look on Kellymom for info. I don't remember what exactally i took.

Re: Raynaud's - ever have it? Know about it?

I have Raynaud's.
What's comforting to know is you can get it during nursing and it doesn't mean you have other underlying issues. I was a little nervous at first.

For me, my telltale signs, which my LC confirmed, included
the white nipples from the vasospasms
the sharp pain in my breasts that felt horrible!

When you're done feeding, immediately cover your nipple so it's not exposed to cooler air. That helped me a lot.

Usually Raynaud's is exacerbated by something else, and once that something else is fixed, Raynaud's doesn't bother you so much. Dr. Newman has a lot of helpful information on it.

In our case, DD's slow teething -- but getting most all at once! -- was our underlying cause. Once we improved that (and the cracked nipples I had from the teething were medicated w/ the all-purpose nipple compound and I switched to LilyPadz instead of the cloth and disposable pads the chafed my nipples further) I found the pain slowly started to decrease.

I still have the white nipples after feedings, but my breasts don't hurt so much anymore that I'm holding my breath to get through the pain!

Glad to hear you were able to get diagnosed and have found things that helped! My girlfriend suffered with that for many months before she was diagnosed properly. They thought she had thrush.

Re: Raynaud's - ever have it? Know about it?

I completely got rid of my symptoms with Vit. B6. Here was my schedule:

200mg - 1week
150mg - 1week
100mg - 1week
50mg - maintenance dose

I had *severe* raynauds and it took about 2 weeks of this treatment before I saw a drastic difference. By week 3 I was pain free completely. My IBCLC said that most people noticed a huge difference after 3-7 days.

I, too had this and I agree that the Vit B6 and warm compresses helped a LOT! I got the little hand warmers and put those in my bra before and after nursing. Oh, and my midwife told me to drink plenty of water and Gatorade.
