What are fitteds?

Lots of questions today ladies, lay in on me...

What in the world is a fitted diaper, and how does it differ from a pocket type (that I have still sitting in the box because I'm a chicken) and a prefold? What are soakers I keep hearing about?

Are fitted better than pockets for nite-time use? IYO of course.....

Thanks....

I looked it up on the glossary but I'm still not quite getting it.

Re: What are fitteds?

A fitted diaper is one which needs a cover b/c there is nothing in it to make it waterproof. They are usually made from hemp, velour, sherpa, or a combination of the above fabrics. I use both fitteds and pockets; acutally, I use AI2s and AIOs, as well. All dipes serve a different purpose, so you need to find which one works best for you. I alternate between pockets and fitteds at night. I like them both!

A fitted diaper is my latest obsession Seriously though, they require a cover and can be made with all kinds of materials. I use a combo of pockets and fitteds with wool covers. I usually use a fitted at night, because my dd tends to leak in pockets. She is a heavy wetter though, so I don't think she is typical.

Re: What are fitteds?

It sounds like the other mamas have told you the difference.

A fitted, obviously, isn't waterproof like most pockets are, so you need a cover. However, if we are using fitteds during the day, we just go coverless. When I notice the fabric is wet, we change. But, if we are going somewhere, we'll put on a cover first!!

I generally use pockets (fuzzi bunz), most of the time, but do have a nice stash of fitteds and prefolds. For nightime I like my fuzzi bunz stuffed with a micro insert and a fb doubler. That's my favorite combo, but I also like a fitted (mutt or PW) with a doubler and a wool soaker over the top. We alternate between those two.

Oh! A soaker is the absorbent part of a fitted. Most of the time, they "snap" into the inside of the diaper and "soak" up the pee!

HTH!

Re: What are fitteds?

There is a chart somewhere that describes each of the cloth diapering options, and the pros and cons. It is probably on diaperpin, but I'm not for sure.

I know the pros of fitteds and covers, though. Economical, reasonable dry time, two barriers to hold in messes, durable, flexible fit, no stuffing.

Re: What are fitteds?

fitted: diapers that are pre-shaped and fitted, usually with elasticized legs a/o waist. Closes with snaps or velcro. Think of a fitted like a disposable but needing a cover.

prefold: made in either cotton or hemp with three sections, the middle section having the most layers to soak up more pee. 4-8-4 means 4 layers of cotton/hemp on the left side, 8 layers in the middle, and 4 layers on the right. Differs from a "flat" in that you don't need to fold it in a convoluted manner to get more layers in the middle.
Can be pinned or snappi'd closed, also needs a cover.
