Re: umbilical cord care

I used alcohol with my first and nothing for my second and both were fine. Just keep it clean and dry and you will be fine.

The cord fell off in about 4 days and looked great. Be careful, though, it does stain yellow. You can get goldenseal powder from healthfood stores.

Re: umbilical cord care

We didn't use anything with either kid. Ds's fell off at 4 days...TOTALLY freaked me out. I wasn't expecting it. Dd's I think was hanging by a straggler that I cut at 11 days. Her's did get a little yucky after that long, so I swabbed it with alcohol or peroxide (can't remember) a few times.

Re: umbilical cord care

DDs fell of at three days and we used goldenseal. Rubbing alcohol is partially water (i cant remember what %) so when the alcohol evaporates, it leaves water on the cord, thus defeating the purpose of the alcohol in the first place. Dont use alcohol. Just leaving it be, breastmilk, or goldenseal are the best options. HTH!

Re: umbilical cord care

hi there,
I just emailed my daught. Pediatrician asking her what it was called that she put on her stump/umbilical cord to speed up the stump removal process.
This really worked well..she just dabbed it on.
She also told us to use hydrogen peroxide to clean it out 1x daily also using a Qtip (it bubbles on the dried blood). Other than that you are not apply alcohol or wash it..just keep it dry by dabbing it.

Here's what she said:
We often use a tiny amount of silver nitrate from a Q-tip type stick applied to the umbilical stump to speed the drying/healing process. MRubyMD.

Re: umbilical cord care

So, those of you who used goldenseal, how bad did it stain? Did it come off in the wash? I am thinking of all my adorable newborn diapers.

I've also heard that it's good to use nothing. With ds, we opened a capsule of dried goldenseal powder and sprinkled it on. After one capsule was gone, his cord was gone too. I have one left for the new baby. If we run out before the cord falls off, I'll just do nothing with it.

Where did you get the capsules?

Re: umbilical cord care

I did absolutely nothing to Tharens and it fell off when he was 4 days old. Infact they didn't even treat it at the hospital with that black gunk cause I wouldn't let them take him for his bath. His pedi had to cut the clip off of it at a follow up appt when he was 4days old (he had a jaundice issue) and that is when it fell off altogether. I still have the clip but didn't keep the stump piece.

Kearnan's took closer to 2weeks and we treated it with alcohol like they told us to at the hospital.
