Really? I'd say 4-7 depending on the size. I did a nb pair of crocheted (more yarn) longies with a 4.5 oz skein. I've seen some for sale on HC that are around 4oz or so and they say it can knit a pair of longies... I wouldn't want to run out though, and I'd buy 2 skeins for a large longies.

It definitely depends whether you are knitting or crocheting. With knitting you can do any size soaker and just about any size shorts with 4 ounces. 8 ounces will definitely do a pair of longies, unless you have an absolutely enormous size.

Crochet is different. You can use 8-10 ounces fairly easily for a large longies.

I use about 4 oz for shorts and soakers and 8 oz for longies... but it depends on how many yards the yarn is as well... you can have a bulky yarn that is 4 oz but only 100 yards and if that's the case you would need 8oz for a soaker. Does that make sense?
