pump vs. baby

So, I was starting to worry that my LO wasnt getting enough to eat, because she only eats for like 10 min on one side and seems content, and doesnt want more for 2+ hours. So, I pumped the other day, and got 4 oz. in like 3 minutes. With a manual pump on just one side. This means she is getting plenty, probably right? I mean, a pump isnt as efficient as she is...and she eats even longer than I pumped. She isnt showing any signs of not eating enough, I was just wondering if how much I pumped in such a short time is even slightly indicative of how much she gets in 3 times that amount of time? I know she isnt eating 12 oz everytime...but YKWIM...lol. Thanks for any input!

The ONLY way to know if your LO is getting enough is if they are having enough wet/poopy diapers. The reality is that there is no way to measure how much milk you are making and how much the baby is getting out of the breast. It makes doctors crazy. If you can pump 4 oz in a short time, be happy that you can pump easily.

It depends on whether or not she has a good latch and is sucking and swallowing, not comfort sucking.

Do you hear good swallowing sounds? Is she gaining well and having the appropriate amount of wet & soiled diapers? If yes and yes, then you may just be blessed with a good supply and an efficient nurser. But, if she is not doing those things, you should see an LC or LLL leader to have her latch evaluated.

Best of luck.

I think she's getting enough. I do the same thing (pump and try to figure out how much my son is getting) I sure wish I could pump that quick though....it takes me about 15 min each side to get 10 oz......I go by weight gain though....my son is 13.13 so that's a 5 1/2 lbs gain since birth and he's 2 months.

Re: pump vs. baby

You are right - pump is not as effective as baby. Some babies are just very efficient at eating and can get all they need very quickly. If she is wetting/pooping normally and gaining normally, you have nothing to worry about! Keep up the good work mama!
