Pointers For Premie Mom

My good friend just had a baby at 35 weeks gestation. She is having trouble with latching and strength of suck. Do any premie mom's have some good pointers. She is really excited to nurse her baby. She wants to be successful.

Re: Pointers For Premie Mom

I am not a pro or anything BUT I did just have my son in September at 35 weeks as well. I had to "sandwich" my nipple for him to latch on good. It took some work but we eventually got it.

The lactation consultant had me supplementing 20 cc's of formula after nursing for no longer than 15 minutes on each breast if he was showing signs of hunger still. She had me do this b/c we nursed for almost and hour and a half each time and he was STILL rooting for more. She explained that his suck wasn't sufficient so we needed to supplement a little. B/C she had me doing this, she had me pumping 5 minutes before and 10 after each nursing session so my milk would come in earlier so we could stop supplementing. He was born on Sunday and my milk came in Tuesday doing this. She recommended pumping b/c the longer you give a bottle, the more chances we had of getting nipple confusion. Once my milk came in, he started getting full so we didn't need to supplement anymore.

Hope this helps!!

Re: Pointers For Premie Mom

I had my daughter at 31 weeks and she was tube fed for 5 weeks, then bottle fed for another month after that (she was fed my breastmilk, i was pumping). Getting her to take the breast was so hard and frustrating. I continued to pump while I was trying to get her to take the breast. It took a lot of patience and a lot of tears but we were finally able to do it. I don't really have any pointers except don't give up! It is possible. My daughter had no problem with nipple confusion after this either. She took both bottle and breast like a champ.
