my baby is going in surgery in sept or okt and my doc say he may not such or breasfeed in 14 days.i dont want to stop breastfeeding for these days because it will be difficault to start over.have anybody been in my shoes?

I was your son a little over 20 years ago. My cleft was limited to my palate (no lip) so they waited until I was 9 months to do the surgery. My mom fed me pumped breast milk in a cup.

Since your son is breast fed, he should be allowed to eat until three hours before his surgery.

I haven't been in your place but I would say pump when he can't BF and find a way to get your BM to him cup or syringe. If you don't have a pump maybe you can see if your son's dr can get you one to borrow from the hosp, some times if it is medically nec you can get them for free instead of renting, worth a shot at least. I would think the BM would help him heal too so definately try to get the BM to him. Good luck mama, keep us posted on his surgery and recovery.

See if your hospital has a lactation specialist to help you. Your son has to eat *something* for the 14 days -- so the doctor should have a plan. He should be able to take your (pumped) breast milk thru a supplemental system or a cup.

KEEP PUMPING during this time, Mama! It's just 2 weeks ... don't give up!

Pump pump pump! Go ahead and start getting a supply up now, so you won't be playing catch-up after surgery!

Also, make it CLEAR to the nursing staff and doctors that your son will be getting ONLY breastmilk and NO formula in the recovery nursery! Go ahead and talk to them ahead of time about his feeding schedule, how much milk you need to provide to them every day, how soon he'll be able to nurse again, etc.

Mama in OP. Just occured to me that your dr has surely done this procedure on other babies, ask how those babies are fed during the no sucking time. You can give the BM in whatever form they suggest.

Hey, let me PM you my dear friend's email-- her son had cleft lip repair done last year and she's BTDT and is going to be starting the second surgery in a few months. She nurses exclusively until last month (9 months)-- while working full time-- she's a great person for you talk to.

I have not been in your situation, but I can tell you that if I were you i would pump pump pump to keep up your supply, and then definately feed bee bee how they would feed normally. (however that is, i dont know. babys gotta eat though!)

I just hope everything works out!!!
