Help! Penis discharge

My son is 5 1/2 months old and I just noticed a small bit of white discharge on the tip of his penis while changing his diaper. How concerned should I be? What could this be? He doesn't seem to feel sick, no fever, no change in behavior, etc. Any ideas?

Re: Help! Penis discharge

If it's just a bit of white and there is no redness and it doesn't appear itchy it's probably just smegma. It's just a build up of skin cells and natural oils produced by the body.

Yep, that sounds totally normal. Just wipe it away, it's harmless.

Thanks mamas. I'll call his doc Monday just to be sure, but I'm glad that it doesn't sound like anything major!

Re: Help! Penis discharge

If he is intact it is smegma and it is nothing to worry about. If you still feel the need to take him to the Dr be warned that most are woefully misinformed about intact penises and the Dr may try to retract him to see what is going on (totally unnecessary and will do a good deal of damamge) or may tell you that it is smegma and you have to pull back the forskin to clean it out. This is also untrue and dangerous to your child. Smegma is totally normal, it is just the same as normal vaginal discharge, it is part of the self cleaning process of the penis. A forskin must never be retracted by anyone other than the owner of the penis, anyone else doing so is going to do far more damage than good.

If your son is circ please disregard this info, and I don't know what a white discharge might be on a circ boy.
