This is how I start out folding the prefold, there is about 2 inches folded down:

I lay it out then set the baby on top, I've found this is easier than trying to fold it under the bum or slide it under:

Pull the first side wing over as far as you can, hold firmly with one hand while pulling the second wing over, then hold both wings together with one hand while you reach for your snappi:

Make sure you have the wings pulled as tightly as you can comfortably get them, then snappi:

Here is the nice tight fold you should end up with:

Notice there is hardly any gaping at the legs because I pulled the wings so tight:

There's no way this baby is gonna leak!:

Pinning an Infant prefold using a preemie prefold as a doubler:

Rolling in the sides:

Pull tightly, push leg down if its not already (ds was actually cooperating today!)

Here is *my* way of using PF's with covers and not using pins or Snappis. I hate pins and Snappi's, and this method works perfect for us! I hope it helps some of you, too!

I use only Baby Soft Wraps. I'm sure this could work with any kind of cover, especially side snapping, but I love these and don't need anything else.

This tutorial was created using a M BSW and a GMD Yellow Edge PF, dyed by the lovely and talented Keli of Sugralumps Boutique!

Step 1: Place PF unfolded in cover, about an inch lower then the top of the back of the cover. I usually have baby laying down already, then slip both cover and PF together under baby.

Step 2: Roll in sides of PF, tucking it under baby's bum/leg to keep in in place.

Step 3: Pull up the front over baby's privates and fan out along the belly.

Step 4: Pull out one side from underneath baby to create a wing. Pull it up to front of diaper and hold with one hand.

Step 5: With your other hand, pull the side of the cover to the front to prepare for snapping. Hold in place, and bring the snaps over to snap the cover in place.

Step 6: Repeat steps 4 and 5 on the other side

Step 7: Tuck PF that sticks out around the legs in to the cover, rolling it in more to create more absorbancy around the legs and wet zone. This will prevent wicking at the legs and will keep that poop in it's place!

End Result: Nice smooth front, no bulk, nice smooth back, minimal bulk. Happy, dry baby! Or, in this case, Cookie Monster!

Wool Wash & Care

Wool only has to be washed once every 2 or 3 weeks unless of course it gets soiled. Wool has a self cleaning property in it called lanolin. If your wool feels damp or wet after wearing it, simply lay it out flat to air out and let the wool do its job of self cleaning. When the lanolin properties get too low, its time to lanolize them. Lanolizing only needs to be done every 2 or 3 months depending on how often its washed. The instructions below will help you care for your wool, for washing only, omit the lanolin step.

Here are the steps to caring for your wool:

1. Run your hot water until its good and HOT in the bathroom sink, allowing it to drain, once its hot turn it off for a few seconds to do step 2.

2. Put the plug in your bathroom sink and put your lanolin in the bottom of the sink, I use about a 1/2-1 inch glob of the lanolin.

3. Run a little hot water in the sink and add baby shampoo or baby wash to the water (wool wash may be used too). Only run enough hot water in the sink to break up the lanolin.

4. Run room temp water to fill the rest of the sink up.

5. Turn your wool wrong side out and submerge into the mixture in the sink and let soak 30 minutes (longer if you feel it needs more lanolizing).

6. After you're done soaking, lay a towel folded in half for you to lay your wool on; take the wool out of the water and gently squeeze the excess water out, do not ring.

7. Lay your wool on the towel and roll the towel up with the wool inside, gently squeeze as your rolling.

8. Lay flat to dry, I like laying them on one of those sweater racks. They take 24 hours sometimes to dry.

Beeps recommends the Northern Essence wool wash. Northern Essence

Add your wash routine and wash/lanolin recommendations too!

--nekkie time as much as possible (we let DD go for an hour after bathtime)
--1-2 baths/day w/ warm water and lots of epsom salts to heal wounds
--stay-dry liners in dipe, if dipe doesn't have one already (we use minkee or OBV)
--squirt bottle w/ 30 drops ____ (an antibacterial wash) squirted onto bum and dabbed w/ dry cloth wipe *gotta find this bottle for the name*
--honey w/ TTO spread onto bum w/ ea. diaper change (TTO has antibacterial properties, while honey heals)
--garlic-infused oil (1/2C olive oil w/ 1 smooshed garlic clove marinated for 24 hrs.) spread on bum w/ ea. diaper change (garlic has antibacterial properties)
OR
-- Mullien Garlic Compound by Herb Pharm (olive oil extract w/ garlic, calendula, st. john's wort and mullien flowers) This is used a lot by homeopaths for ear infections, but for diaper rash can be dropped in the ears, too.
-- calendula ointment (not gel--it has a bunch of other ingredients that can cause irritation) by Boiron used in place of diaper cream at the slightest sign of redness.
-- sulphur (2-30c strength 3x/day for 3d) pellets (no joke. DD makes a miraculous near-recovery EVERY time we start these)
--during rash (or anything the body needs to fight--Winter colds, illnesses) infant probiotics (geradophilus)--we use Kasha Hope-- powder sprinkled onto food 2x/day

and finally, when the sores were really bad and we'd gone thru all of the above, then worried we might have yeast, we were given Cicatrisan ointment (have no idea what's in it beyond calendula, as it's in a foreign language) which has really helped to heal the wounds and save us from resorting to antibiotics.

Most of these things can be found at Whole Foods or online (or my peds office

) Yes, I'm aware most of these sound crazy--the garlic in the ears really threw me for a loop last time.

Anyone else have any non-traditional ideas to add?

Hope this helps a bit. I know how much it sucks to see your kid in pain from a seemingly untreatable rash.

Another trick is not to have you prefold to big. Folks seem to size up but you really can get away with a prefold about 17" rise through 30 pounds.

The second to the last photo talks a little bit about pinning: Once you have the fold down pinning will be easier. Practice on stuff animals if you have to and then move on to the live baby. When pinning you only need to grab a couple of layers of the fabric. You do not have to go through all of layers to get a good hold. Good folding will lead to good pinning that stays.

Practice makes perfect.

My pinning tutorial:

I LOVE pins, so I thought I'd share my method.

Step 1: Fold extra length over in the back, lay baby on prefold

Step 2: Fold side panels to the center, tight up against baby's bum

Step 3: Fold front up over baby, then pull out little wings/tabs as needed at the top front of the diaper so that it will overlap with the back wings

Step 4: You will have two layers of prefold on the front top corners from folding the side panels into the center. Insert your fingers between those 2 layers on one side

Step 5: Pull the front tight against the baby to meet the side, also pull the back wing tight against baby, wrapped on top of the front panel. Pull very tight, so some baby rolls form on the babys side, don't worry after you are done it will loosen to a perfect fit

Step 6: Keep your fingers between the bottom 2 layers of the prefold as instructed in step 4, pin through the top 3 layers (the 2 layers from the back panel and the top layer of the front panel). This way you have a layer of prefold and your fingers between the baby and the pins. Try to use the entire length of the pins.

Step 7: Repeat on other side, then tuck in around the legs as needed.

For reference, here is the same diaper snappied. I can get a much neater and tighter fit using the pins.
