Unhappy I'm a PRO at BFing, but I suck at ...

PUMPING! HELP!!!!!

Here's my background.....
I have four kids. Breastfed all of them from birth to around 2 1/2 (some a bit more and some a bit less). All of my babies have always been long and lean (and still are at almost 10 years old), but always satisfied when nursed. (When I have pumped my BM just has a small amount of fatty hindmilk layer at the top. It's mostly formilk-at least when I pump.) I drink a lot a water.( That's all I drink!)

OK here is the problem...

I have tried to pump over the years while bfing all of my children. I've tried hand pumps and hospital grade pumps. Currently, I have a Medula DoubleEase pump. I think/read it's a great pump.

BUT...

I've NEVER been able to pump more than 2-3 oz. collectively from BOTH breasts. This bothers me!
I just got the pump out and ordered new tubing and today I sat down with my tall glass of H2O and Layla (almost 1 year old) nursing on one side and TRIED to pump. I pumped for 30 min., switching sides and still....I only was able to get 1/2 oz from both breast!! LOOK!

I plan to BF until DD is ready to ween, but she loves the cup and I'd really like to pump and put it in a cup for DD for dinnertime. Also, DS (3.5 yr) has the flu and I wish I could pump and give it to him. I just envy those of you who pump with ease and are able to store it, make breastpops (frozen bm), put it in oatmeal for DD. I'm able to manually express a bit for earaches and rashes, and most recently pinkeye, but I just wish I could pump like 9 oz ! That would be a miracle!

Do you think that some women just can't let down to pump?

So, have any of you ever had this issue? Your a pro at bfing, but suck at pumping? Any thoughts on what to do? Thanks in advance and sorry so long.

I do have to say that I've never judged my ability to bf, by only what comes out of the breastpump. I love nursing and am a SAHM, so i don't HAVE to pump, but would really like to find out why I can't.

I know I have a HUGE supply and have been BFing for 3years 8month and Tandem nursed for 2yrs. But I have never been able to pump (though I havent tried a lot) The only time I was able to pump was when DD was sick and I was so full, I got a ton but thats the only time.

This might be confusing...

DS #1 was a preemie and I pumped from day one. He didn't latch until he was a month old, so I was pumping exclusively until then and gave up pumping as soon as he latched. I pumped at least 8 oz, per breast, every time with him. It was about 50/50 foremilk/hindmilk when separated.

DS #2 was a healthy full-term baby and I had no reason to pump. He's been an efficient nurser since day 1, and he's a chunker. When his pediatrician feels his belly at check-ups, she always tells me how his belly is like a canteen ("There must be 20 oz in there!") When he was 2 mos old I bought a PIS advanced. I can never get more than an ounce! It's obscene. I tried to pump so that he'd have some 'breastsicles' for date nights. The first month, I tried every single flippin day, still only getting less than an ounce.

So, two babies, plenty of milk supply both times. First baby, I could pump enough to feed a NICU. Second baby, nada. I think when you pump from the beginning, your body is programmed to respond to the pump. When you don't pump from the start, it *might* mean that your body won't respond when you try to pump later on. At least for me, that's what happened. KWIM?

I wouldn't worry about supply issues. I'd call LLL, too. Most LLL have someone who specializes in WOHMs, and that person would have to know a ton about pumping.

I am in the same boat. I can pump anything. Been nursing for 4 years. Nothing comes out. But nursing is going great, no weight issues etc.

Maybe the LLL has more info.

Thanks ladies. I attend LLL meetings every month and LOVE it! I will bring it up next time.

That's very interesting about pumping from the get go. When we have our next one I 'll plan to do that and see if it makes a difference.

Another thing...
Sometimes I feel like the pump doesn't suck hard enough. Any of them. It will do it's thing for 30 min and then I'll pull it off and can manually express very easily.Doesn't make sense?! I don't like mannually expressing b/c it makes me sore. Anyhow, just a bit more info out there for anyone elses input. Thanks!

Some women just don't respond well to a pump. I'm one of them!

I had major oversupply -- like 5 streams of milk going literally 4 feet or so. Still couldn't get a damn thing with a pump.
