Question I've bolied, I've bleached, what next???

Just recently some of our diapers have this God awful ammonia smell that's extremely noticable at changing, but ALL seem to smell if left for even ONE day in the pail (the pail has been cleaned)

as the title states:
I've tried boiling - still stink
I've tried bleach - still stink
I've tried baking soda - still stink
I've tried Calgon (I have slightly hard water)
now I just rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse and hope for the best, but of course some still stink. I'm about to start separating out the STINKY ones and burning them!!!

PLEASE offer up something else I can try

oh I use mostly pockets with MF inserts (some AIO's and some hemp for overnight) I KNOW it's the inserts, but I don't know what else to do...

HELP!!

Please!!

How long have you used the inserts? If it has been awhile you may need to get new ones.
I don't know what else to tell you since you seemed to have tried everything. Possibly let them sit and soak overnight in a washer. Fill with hot water and add baking soda, vinegar, TTO, detergent.

My daughters smell fine when they come out but then when she pees it smells. I think it is from sitting in a hot room for a few days before I washed them.

I've been using the inserts for 7-8 months.

Really I could possibly have to replace my inserts? I wasn't planning on that!

DAWN DAWN DAWN DAWN... use it.. it will strip the diapers CLEAN!! just use a tad though like 1/8 or 1/4 tsp in the wash and I swear it will take the stink away.. I had the same issue and now I only use Dawn when washing dipes and I love it.

Try soaking overnight in Borax and hot water. It will attach to any detergent left in the diapers and pull it out of the fabric, and it will disinfect. Plus it is very safe.

Have you tried baking soda in the wash, then vinegar in the rinse? That worked for us, about 1/4 c of each if I remember correctly. In addition to the small amount of detergent you normally use, of course. hth

Angela-- when you say you only use Dawn when washing dipes, does that mean you use it instead of any other detergent? Or that that is all you use to strip the dipes (in addition to other detergent)? tia

Re: I've bolied, I've bleached, what next???

Well, I bought some dipes from here that smelled, but not of ammonia. I had to wash them as many times as my brand new unbleached CPF before getting all the build up out!

I turned my water heater up to high and it was HOT. The top of the washer was too hot to touch.

I washed them 3 times without detergent, then 2 times with dawn (just a squirt). Then one time with a bit of our regular detergent, and once without anything added to make sure they were rinsed. EACH time I used my double rince option and the lowest level of water that would cover the dipes well. This helped with the agitation really working the dipes.

It was alot of work, and DH tried not to complain about the amount of water, but it did work!

Yep.. I have a little bottle of Dawn that I use soley for dipes and DH's work stuff since he works on airplanes and it gets everything out. I have not had any issues with stink, residue or anything. But you have to be careful if you do more than of course you get bubbles and you have to rinse a few times.. so I only use 1/4 at the most.
