birth control and BF

over the weekend i got what i thought was my period but with in a few hours it was gushing and it wouldnt stop and i was starting to get light headed. i went to the hospital and they started me on cyclen bc pills to help slow and stop it. they said it may lower my milk but i am wondering is it still safe to bf? i know it gets in to milk but the package says it does not harm the baby. now i dont intend to stay on this very long but i cant keep bleeding like that. i have an appointment to see my regular doc.what do you think? i dont really want to give up all together.

Re: birth control and BF

Its fine to continue BFing, It wont harm the baby. If it would they would have told you that at the ER. You can call a local pharmasist or the ER and ask them for reassurance if you want.

my doctors all said that taking birth control while BFing was not a concern... but they did put me on a particular one called MicroNor (sp?) that didnt have a particular hormone like the others, that affects BM supply... it had a SLIGHTLY lower effectiveness 99.7 instead of 99.9 or something silly like that...
from what i heard from many doctors, it is not good for your body to become pregnant again soon after giving birth, so they certainly offer BC pills or similar...
and all said there was no concern through the BM only that the particular hormone in most was possible to reduce milk supply....
hope this helped a little- to put your mind at ease...

Sorry you're going through this! I think the best thing is to keep nursing and see your doctor as soon as you can. The risk of taking estrogen is that it can decrease your milk supply, not harm your baby. Here's more info:

How old is your baby, by the way? Is this your first postpartum period?
