Infants with low blood sugar

This seemed like the best place to ask this. Is it common for a doctor to recommend putting rice in a newborn's bottle for low blood sugar? Baby was only a day old. This occured in the hospital.

Um, no. Never heard of it, ever. Two babies in the NICU, both breastfed. I was told if there was low blood sugar we would have to supplement with formula. They have glucose for that. If baby has low blood sugars, baby should at least be in special care, if not NICU. I can't for the life of me think of why a neonatologist would suggest rice cereal in a bottle!!!

Re: Infants with low blood sugar

Actually, it probably depends on the baby. My baby had low blood sugar when he was born and they just kept him in the nursery and gave him formula a couple of times until it was back up. They said it was common for big babies and not a big deal. He wasn't in special care or NICU and it took about 4 hrs to get up where it should be.

So I guess it depends on how low it was. But the ped didn't mention rice ceral.

Maybe because it was born at a hic town hospital in Louisiana where moms still labor deliver and have post partum care all on different floors. Maybe because my sis is mentally handicapped and not capable of caring for herself much less this poor babe. I am so concerned about this baby.

Oh she is formula fed.

My DD was 6lbs 14ozs at birth (a week and a half early). Her blood sugar was low at birth. They gave her formula (no rice) and she was fine within a few hours.
