Re: Supplementing an EBF baby with Vit. D?

Our pediatrician mentioned it once. We chose not to do it. I believe that breastmilk is complete nutrition for a baby. If babies needed a dense concentratrion of Vit. D, it would be in breastmilk.

Additionally, the vitamins recommended are produced by formula companies. Coincidence? I think not. They're trying to make money off of all babies, one way or another. I'm not ok with that.

I have seven children. Given the drops for all, never gave any to any of them.

They are all fine! Some were EBF some were combo kids.

My ped just told me that DS needed some sun a couple minutes a day, a couple/few times a week. Never uttered a word about vitamin supplements.

Your baby will not get enough UV rays through a window to manufacture Vitamin D. You have to actually go outside.

My pediatrician recommended them just for the winter (as we live so far north). We gave them intermittently but have stopped now that it is spring and we try to get outside every day.

(OF course, I type this as it is raining and miserable here )

Re: Supplementing an EBF baby with Vit. D?

Thanks everyone!!

I totally agree with pp that BM is totally perfect for our babies just the way it is! That's why we make it, right?

I was never given that speech with the other two, not even with dd2 who has Spina Bifida. You would think they would be worried about her bone health.

It's just the newest "fad". The dr even said that himself! He is totally not pushy about anything, he just passes along the info that he has. He has been around long enough to know that you can't force a parent to do anything to their child that they don't agree with. That's why I like him. His nurse, not so much. She is nice, but has an odd personality for a pedi nurse.

Anyway, I am not going to even get the scrip filled, it is nice and sunny here most of the time, all year round. We are an outdoorsy family anyway, so he will be just fine!

Thanks again!

My ped said just nursing in front of a window would give my LO enough Vitamin D at 6 months if I didn't want to supplement.

Re: Supplementing an EBF baby with Vit. D?

I have been told this as well and my ped asks me every visit if I'm giving him the vitamins. I give it to him like once a week or less because initially I did have a hard time remembering and then as I read more and it got sunnier here I felt it wasn't necessary. And they are full of sugar and other ingredients that didn't sound good to me when I read the label. So anyway, when the dr. asks I just say that I don't remember them very much. I really don't want to debate it... I didn't even dare to ask about iron supplementation now that LO is 6 months old. I make my own rice cereal but I already know what they are going to say so I'm not bothering to discuss it until they do the anemia test at 9 months and then if he's low I'll worry about it. Anyway, different topic, just ranting cuz we went there today.

Re: Supplementing an EBF baby with Vit. D?

Our pediatrician suggested this at my son's 2 month appointment, so I said ok and left. At his 4 month appointment, he asked me if we had done it, I said no, I hadn't, I just made a little more of a concious effort to get him a little sun exposure. Living in Florida, it's not exactly difficult. He was totally cool with that. Love our pediatrician!
