Do I need to supplement...

I've successfully made it a year BFing while at home and pumping while at work (I'm a FT WOHM) I'm not ready to HUTHs or quit BFing but my supply is really low so I need some advice on whether or not a supplement is necessary. Here's the deal... I've been able to leave DS with 12 oz of milk in bottles per day but I've had to pull from the freezer to get this amount for quite some time... I had a miscarriage about two months back and my supply tanked and I never quite got it back... I'm on my last bottle in the freezer and I'm uncertain where to go from here... I think I'll be able to get him 8 oz a day but don't know if that's enough... He does BF often at night. Also, we introduced whole milk around a year in his oatmeal... So, he gets 8 oz of milk in there per day. Do you think 16 oz plus nursing is enough - 8 oz of BM and 8 oz of cows milk? I'm eager to hear your thoughts... Thanks!

Re: Do I need to supplement...

My DD is just a couple of days younger than your son and my ped said 16-24 oz of milk (cow or human) a day at this age. Friends ped's have said even less than that (8-12 I think). Sounds like your son is easily getting that and I wouldn't worry about a thing.

I think 8oz a day of ebm is enough, since ds is over a year, obviously eating solids, and is nursing in the evenings when you get home.
Just increase the solids, maybe give some water during the day as well.

My dd is 13 mos and I still pump once daily at work, but I only get around 6oz per day for her to drink and that is enough, along with solids and water during the day. I do nurse a couple of times in the evening, along with once or twice during the night, and again before I leave in the am. for a total of at least 5 times a day.

I don't plan to ever give dd formula, if possible
Good luck to you!

I would think that as long as he's getting a variety of solids, he should be fine. I would tend to add an infant multivitamin before adding a lot of whole milk - you don't want him to develop an allergy or intollerance from too much dairy too soon. Or you could try rice or almond milk, too.

Re: Do I need to supplement...

Glad to see some answers to this. I've been wondering myself how much bm was needed after a year. E is only 9 months, but just trying to plan ahead.
