Re: totally depresed and giving up

Do you have a LLL near you? Perhaps you can find them in a yahoo group, I know we have one here in my area.
Call them, someone will be able to help you on a much more personal level than any of us.

Sounds to me as if you may be experiencing a bit of a nursing strike. Keep with it. Although he may throw a fit and it does become very frustrating to you, I know... still offer him that breast first (the left was it?)

I know all too well the pain of not being able to nurse... drying up cold turkey (not for wanting to, not for lack of trying NOT TO).

Please get in touch with someone in LLL an IBCLC in your area.. they WILL help you, and there should not be any charge.

Best wishes hon!!!

Re: totally depresed and giving up

YOU DID NOTHING WRONG!!! We are all human, and need some time to do things. I had many hurdles, too (thrush, cracked nipples, projectile puking, blocked ducts). The best thing for the excrutiatingly painful cracks tea bags! I'd never heard of it, but my midwife told me about them. The tannin in the tea heals the cracks, just wet them and put them in your bra for 20 min. Grated carrot is also great, just make sure it's cold...soothing! For the thrush I used gentian violet with GREAT results. Also, Dr. Jack Newman has a nipple cream that works well if your ped will prescribe it to you. For the blocked duct, I tried pumping but found my DD to be the best pump, so as soon as your breast is better and your DD will take it, giver. You can do this!! I know how hard it is...just lock yourself in a room and yell when it gets too much!

Re: totally depresed and giving up

Oh, you are making me so sad. With my 2nd child (first I nursed) was a babe I went through the same thing. I remember being in so much pain, from cracked nipples and full breasts because he couldn't latch on and I would just stand in the shower and cry.
I was ready to give up but lucky for me my DH was very supportive. I went to see a lactation consultant at the hospital he was born at and she helped me to get him latching on. Because of the way the roof of his mouth was he couldn't get a latch and needed extra help. It took about two weeks before things got better.
Also, if you try and express some of your milk and rub it on the cracked area it works to heal it! I really works, and it's not painful like those OTC brands you buy that are so thick.
And another thing the LC suggested was get the baby to learn how to suck first...use your pinky finger, put some of your milk on it and bend it so it is towards the roof of her mouth and she'll learn to suck rather then you get upset and frustrated trying to teach on the breast.
Good Luck
