Iron Supplementation

DS had a pedi visit last week and they were doing some bloodwork to rule out some things and during the process noticed he was quite anemic. I am to give him 1.33 ml of Fer-i-Sol three times a day. That seems like quite a bit to me. I am worried about him becoming quite constipated from that much iron. Does anyone have any experience with iron supplementation? Oh, I should mention that DS will be 9 months on the 17th.

Re: Iron Supplementation

I was recommended by my doctor to supplement with iron and something else, but after researching online, I discovered that the iron in breastmilk is highly digestible by babies and most babies do not need to be supplemented. My daughter has never been supplemented or anemic.

Hope that helps.

Re: Iron Supplementation

One more thing, if he's 9 months then he's probably eating solids, right? Like iron fortified cereals? He probably gets more than enough iron out of that alone!

Re: Iron Supplementation

I have no experience with anemia, as we tend to absorb iron very well in our family. I just wanted to suggest that you try giving him iron-rich foods and gradually work up to the 3X daily of Fer-i-sol ( if you end up needing to give him that much of it) so that your son's body has a chance to gradually adjust to so much constipating iron in his diet.
