A tiny bit of blood from a cracked nipple can turn a whole bottle of EBM red really quickly. It is still just fine to give. I'd investigate for potential nipple trauma.

Yup... Are your nipples cracked? I had bad crescent cracks in my nipples with my first, and often the EBM would be red until the nipples healed... You'll find it settles in the bottom, too, when you refrigerate, and once she spat up a tiny bit after a bottle feed, and there was a bit of blood. Shocking, but not a real problem (except for your poor nipples ).

no cracks or trauma I'm using a new pump, the shields are too big, I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

Re: uummm....pumping blood?? HALP!

When DS#1 was 5 weeks old he spit up tons of blood mixed spit-up at about 3am. I checked over my self for cracks and couldn't find a thing. We went to the ER and they found nothing wrong with DS. I talked to my mother later that morning and she said the same thing happened to her with my sister! That next week at my 6 week check up my OB called it "rusty pipe syndrome" it never happened again after that one time. I hardly pumped and rarely pump now with DS#2, so I cant really tell if it ever did come back.

Ive also had a sore/cracked nipple bleed like crazy when pumped. Maybe the new pump caused some internal damage?

I think it's the pump, I just tried to pump on that side and it burns a little bit, enough to be uncomfortable. I think I'm going to put it away for tonight and see what happens in the morning. Thanks ladies
