Red face No breastmilk?!

I have a 2yr old DD and 4mo DS. I tried and wanted to breastfeed both of them. I tried nursing often, I tried herbal teas, I tried different positions and techniques and my babies continued to lose weight b/c they were not getting enough food. I talked to the la leche league, my doctor and a lactation specialist. They were not able to pinpoint the problem. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced a problem like this and if so... did you receive help? I would love to breastfeed any other children we are blessed to have.

Re: No breastmilk?!

I'd read this section on hypoplastic tubular breasts and see if you think that might apply to you.

Either way, I'd build a relationship with an IBCLC (not just an LC) during pregnancy and hope with early intervention you can figure out what the problem was.

How long did you try for? I was told I was having issues when by a week my milk still hadn't fully come in and my bub was losing weight and they were concerned, and then boom, it came.

Re: No breastmilk?!

I have always struggled with low milk supply issues. But, I have managed to finally exclusively BF my youngest son after giving up too early with the other three. I managed to nurse each subsequent baby longer (#1 for 1 week, #2 for 2 1/2 months, #3 for 9 months & #4 for 27 months and still going), because of increased knowledge and support. Also, most mothers who struggle with low supply see some increase with each subsequent pregnancy and nursing experience.

A few things that really helped me:
-Research. I have read everything that is out there on breastfeeding difficulties and low milk supply, so I built up a lot of stategies over the years. Especially look into information on pumping to increase supply, supplementing at the breast (vs. bottle), and galactagogues.
-LLL support. Go to meetings during pregnancy and once the baby is born.
-Do not give up if it turns out that you must supplement. Breastfeeding is not an all or nothing deal. Every drop of breastmilk has benefit. Obviously the more the better, but don't feel that you need to stop just because you cannot produce a full supply.
-Here are some great places to start:

The Breastfeeding Mother's Guide to Making More Milk
is coming out in December 2008 and I think it will be very beneficial for low milk supply mamas. Diana West is a very knowledgable LC and author. I have emailed with her personally and she is wonderful.
