What should I do?

DD bit me a couple of days ago and it broke the skin. I used lanolin and continued to nurse on that side. It hurt, but I don't pump well (I can pump for 30 minutes and only get 1/2 an ounce...I only have a manual pump) and I'm prone to mastitis and I didn't want to end up with clogged ducts and then mastitis. It hurt a little, but it wasn't unbearable...until last night. This morning its even worse and it looks like it might be infected. It is red and swollen around the 2 little scabs (teeth marks). What can I do? I have a prescription for an antibiotic (my dr. gave me one to keep on hand because I have gotten mastitis several times so just in case I come down with it on a weekend or when the office is closed, I'd have it). Would that help? Can I put antibiotic ointment on it? Should I stop nursing her on that side and try pumping/hand expressing? Help!

I would check with an LC or LLL leader. You want to make sure any ointment you put on is safe for BF. Also, if you take the antibiotics, I suggest also taking probiotics. It would not be good to end up with thrush ones the infection clears up.

Thanks! I always take probiotics when taking an antibiotic. I got thrush when DD#4 was a couple of months old and it took us almost 3 months to finally get it cleared up. I definitely learned that lesson
