Spinoff: insurance paying for pediasure

I decided to make a new thread instead of hy jacking the formula thread.

My 2nd son is/was FTT (depending in which DR you talk to) He is definitely at the very bottom of the growth curve and got there just recently. He also has Bad reflux. We have been seeing a Ped. GI and a ped. Nutritionist since he was 6 months old. He is now 1 yr. He also is seeing a ped. endocrinologist because of a low growth hormone.

His Nutritionist wants to put him on Pediasure because she feels it is more appropriate for him now. Do you think insurance would cover his pediasure? he does eat some solid foods.

I don't think they would but it wouldn't hurt to ask your doctor is there a way. Wic helps some people with it. Not trying to sound negative...I just don't think our insurance would and haven't heard of it being done before. Hope you can find out.

Re: Spinoff: insurance paying for pediasure--yes w/medical need

I just called my insurance (TRICARE) and they said it would be covered with an autherization/referral form the DR and be considered DME so we would have to get it form a medical supply store.

You might want to make sure they mean oral pediasure as theres both an oral and an enteral pediasure. The enteral is much more ocmmonly covered than the oral, but doesn't taste great since its meant to go in a tube and not be tasted. Hope they will! I know WIC will in some states but not all.

I do know wic will cover it...i see your military too (wave) you might want to try that route first as Tricare will put up a huge fuss about it. You wont be able to pick it up at your local pharmacy, it will have to come though a home health office.. hope that helps a bit

Re: Spinoff: insurance paying for pediasure

Hi Military mama!

Yes, But with DH being an Officer, we don't qualify for WIC. I already have to deal with a home health care place for my oldest son's nebulizer equipment.

I will ask the ped and see if they will write me a referral it shouldn't be a problem I hope.
