"retired" prefolds from diaper service

Hi, Im new here and expecting my first in 4 months. I am commited to using CDs but all of the information on the site is making my head spin. Everybody seems to have different ideas for washing, detergents, additives to wash etc. Im sure Ill get it eventually but was wondering if anyone had any thoughts about purchasing "retired" prefolds from my local diaper service? They charge 5$ for a pound. Maybe a way to save some $$ ?

Depends if they are actual "useable" diapers or if they're just rags. I would definitely ask them. If they are useable dipes, you should go for it, but remember they do wear out, so purchase extras!

Prefolds aren't expensive, it's the shipping that gets you. You can get them for about $2 each online. cotton momma has indian PFs on sale now.. so soft.

Are the DS ones 4X6X4 or 4x8x4 (premium) ? and how many for a lb? I'm guessing it's 4 or 5... So that is about $1.25 each. Good deal IF they are in good shape. NOt worth it if they are rags.

Don't know about the prefolds, but I'll give you a tip that will make laundering easier: don't start out with a complicated routine, because if it doesn't work you'll have too many variables to experiment with. Start out with ONE wash/rinse cycle with 1/2 the regular amount of detergent. If your diapers are too stinky, not absorbent enough, etc., THEN you can start adding/changing things. We have been using the very simple method on our pockets, fitteds and prefolds for 4 months now and it works great.

unless they are in great shape i wouldnt - prefolds are heavy so a pound probably isnt htat many. I would suggest www.mommacommune.com/boutique. great prices and use code DSMomma for a discount and you get free shipping- which on preoflds is very important
