Sew your own gdiaper cloth inserts

Okay, if anyone is interested here is how I sewed my own gdiaper inserts after getting frustrated with prefolds being so bulky and not wanting to pay $6.95-$12.95 for a decent insert.
I used things I already had. 12 gerber prefolds, some old baby towels (these had been through 4 kids), and my sewing machine.

Flushable insert beside gerber prefold

Flushable on top of gerber prefold

Flushable on top of tri-folded prefold showing what you need to trim

Trimmed to size

Zig-zag stitch to prevent fraying

Trimmed gerber prefold on top of baby towel

Towel folded over prefold

Cut towel around prefold (cut close around side and bottom but leave about 1/2" more fabric at top to tuck in you want it to be a tight fit)

Prefold on top of cut towel (put prefold to the side for the next few steps)

Cut towel folded right sides together and pinned

Side and bottom stitched but top left open

Towel flipped right side out

Stuff trimmed prefold into sewn cut towel

Fold in excess towel fabric at top

Top stitch 1/4" around the insert (make sure to put a few stitches in the middle so doesn't bunch in the wash)

Insert in medium g diaper

Folded up in g and not bulky

Another insert I made

gdiaper on baby bum with insert nice and not bulky

1 baby towel will make 3 inserts. So you would need 4 to make 12 inserts.

1 pack gerber prefolds $12-$16
4 baby towels $10-20 or if you have some you don't use $0
Bought pre-made 12 @ 6.95 = $83.40 Bought pre-made 12 @ $12.95 = $155.40
Price comparison $22-$36 for 12 inserts versus $83.40-$155.40 store bought
Poor frugal Mommy's satisfaction=priceless

Update-I have had many questions about the type of prefolds and the towel so here is the info.
Prefolds-Gerber 4x6x4 (not the 2x4x2 ones) thicker prefolds found at Target (the label on the shelf-not on the gerber package-said nighttime prefolds)
Towel-just some infant towels I had and wasn't using. You can use any fabric that is safe to go against babies skin. I would recommend fleece, flannel, or terry. But essentially you could use whatever you wanted.
The reason for the towels are to keep the zig-zagged trimmed prefold from fraying in the wash. It helps to put a few stitches in the middle of the finished insert after topstitching to keep it from bunching in the wash too.
If you have a serger, you can simply serge the prefold tri-folded to the desired length and not have to worry about fraying.

Re: Sew your own gdiaper cloth inserts

Thanks for posting this! They look great and easy enough that I could actually do this myself! We've been using the flushables when we travel, but I think I'd rather use these when we go places like the in-laws or my parents.

Thanks again!

Can I ask a dumb question? Why put the towel over the prefold?
