Question Substituting fresh for canned

I would like to start using more fresh veggies in my cooking instead of canned veggies. This may be a stupid question, but everyone has to start somewhere, right?

If a recipe calls for a can of tomatoes, can I just substitute it for 2 fresh tomatoes? It seems like 2 tomatoes would cut up to be about the right amount, but would it actually be more than that because the tomatoes break down during the cooking process that goes into canning them?
